What should Year 6 writing look like?
To meet the National Standards for
writing, we have to be writing solidly at Level 3L by the end of the year. To be
above the national standards, we have to be starting to write at Level 4E of the
curriculum.
Here is the level 3 success criteria.
Do you do all of this independently and consistently? If not, what do you need
to work on?
At Level Three
Audience, Purpose and Voice
I independently apply a process and write texts choosing
language and overall text structures that suit my audience and
purpose (recounting, describing, narrating, reporting, arguing
or explaining)
I can identify the text features appropriate to the task
I independently write about several experiences or ideas
including detail or personal comment and group these in
paragraphs beginning to use related links
I independently use content that is relevant to the curriculum
task or items of information and include detail and/or comment
supporting the main points
I write clear and concise evaluations of tasks using
supporting evidence and detail
I independently use a wide variety of precise and effective
descriptive words (adjectives, adverbs, nouns and verbs) and
adjectival and adverbial phrases that clearly convey ideas,
experiences or information
I independently use subject specific vocabulary
I independently use similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia and
imagery to support meaning and for effect
I independently choose appropriate media for publishing
including visual and digital
Structure
I routinely and independently plan and organise rich
language, ideas and information using a variety of planning
tools
I independently write simple and compound sentences that
vary in their beginnings, structures and lengths and are correct
grammatically, and complex sentences that are mostly
grammatically correct (using conjunctions such as when, how,
because, although)
I use complex punctuation such as possessive apostrophes
for possession, commas for clauses, or semicolons
I independently use titles, sub headings, labelled diagrams,
charts, maps and illustrations to support meaning
Proofreading and Editing
I independently proof read to correct grammar, spelling and
punctuation using appropriate computer based or print tools
I spell most words correctly and demonstrate knowledge of
common spelling patterns
I independently review and revise my writing to clarify meaning
and add impact, often in response to feedback
National Standard by the end of Year 6

I am trying to check Room 25's Class Blog every couple of weeks.
It is a great way to see what the children are learning and enjoying in the classroom! I am looking forward to the next post!
