Camp Merc 16th -18th March 2015

Camp Merc was really fun, everyone had a great time. We arrived on Monday morning after a VIP Jet ( bus), and we got straight into our activities. Thankfully Cyclone Pam didn’t reach Long Bay and all events went ahead as planned. The waves were 100foot (if you were an ant) and Jess Keytes mum described it as a washing machine. The chief was amazing and all the food including the scones and banana cake were scrummy. Here are some pictures to show you the great time we had, we wished that we could of stayed a week :)

Learning on Godwits

Limosa limosa.jpgThis  is the Godwit (Limosa.)

We have been learning about the Godwits, finding out about their habitat and the problems they are currently facing. Here are some facts that we learnt.

- Whenever a Godwit has hatched in NZ they stay here for 3-4 years until they are ready to fly the long journey.
- Approximately 3000 juveniles will stay in NZ as they will not make the trip to Alaska.
- The number of Godwits that make the trip to Fiji is 200, Australia is 15 000 and NZ  80 000 birds.

- Godwits leave Alaska when it starts to get colder and arrive in NZ in September and they stay in NZ until late February or early March.
- Godwits flight path is NZ to China, China to Alaska, Alaska to NZ.
- Godwits can cover 11500 km in 8 days.
Flight path of E7.
-Godwits habitats are being destroyed in China because people are building there.
- Godwits have long beaks so that they can eat the pipi and worms.
- Godwits have long legs so that they can wade through the water.

More facts and information to follow :)

Pronouns and Nouns

Today we looked at the difference between a pronoun and a noun by reading two stories. First

1672815 and Nancy Lowen's other book If I were a Noun.

See if you can tell your parents the difference between the two. We were looking at pronouns, and nouns because we're currently writing our reports and nouns are used more frequently than pronouns in this type of writing.
