Mathmatics

We have been learning about adding fractions with uncommon denominators, for example:

 2/5 + 3/4

We have learnt a new strategy that looks at finding the LCD ( Lowest Common Denominator) and then adding the fractions after doing this.

This link shows you what we mean

The Sea

The sea is a lion
Eating everything in sight
Roaring at everything and everyone.
Scratching at the rocks

Gnawing at the cliffs
All day long
It sings a song
Of crashing drums and loud maracas

But in the night it changes
from a hungry lion
To a harmless butterfly
Sweeping up the lonely sand.

By Briana

The Boat

The boat is a snake
Making a wake

Slithering through the ocean
Like a genie with a potion

By Tom

The storm begins

The wind howls like a wolf.

The tree's dance in the wind

Leaves sprint across the floor

The rain dives to the ground

Windows close their eyes

The storm begins.

Money

I get passed around to everyone.
I get exchanged to anything from anyone.

People love me and I change between time and countries.
There are lots of different types of me for each and everyone of you.

I have the face of famous people, as well as their signatures.
Everyone knows  about me and loves to see how much of me they have got.
They can't stop spending me but like to try and save me up.

By Claudia

Winter

Winter's icy grip holds the world tight.
He nips my cheeks and bites my toes.
He paints my ears and nose red and the world white.

He doesn't like sparrows, pigeons or doves.
He hands our car sleeping pills and issues everyone scarves and gloves.
He goes around chapping lips and teasing your throat.

By Vanessa Evans
Stars

They watch over us at night
They run through the sky
They shine a torch on the ground
They hide behind the clouds
They pop up and say hi.

By Charlotte WB
The Lawnmower

As I turn on the lawnmower he grunts and groans
Then I take him outside
His job is to munch all the innocent grass
Grass is going everywhere
Yelling as loud as an elephant
Then as soon as I put it away
The grass sighs in relief, until the next day.

Personification Poems that were written for homework

Mr ...........

Mr ......................paints at night, at every window.
He only uses white.
He is everywhere but you cannot see him
I never hear him working, not a scratch, sigh or cough
Who is he?

New style of learning

This week we've also been learning how to be more independent. Miss von Detten has set up a system of 'Must Do's' and 'Can Do's'. As it says during the week we are each involved in what tasks we choose. They have been carefully selected by Miss von Detten so that we are learning but in our own way. We need to ensure that by Friday all our 'Must Do's' have been completed. Were also going to try and make sure that we reflect on our learning for that week too.

Writing Week 3

We have been writing poems that include personification. First we had to find out the meaning of the word and then we focused on "Our house awakening". Here is an example by Daniella:

The lazy bed pushes me off and yawns.
As the curtains wave to me, the windows blink and open their eyes.
I go outside for some fresh air, but the house coughs and swallows me.
The hunched cupboard waits to be opened and when it does it groans.

I go to brush my teeth and the sink's mouth gargles, then gulps the water down.
As the sneezing toaster pops up,  I eat my toast.
My favourite book flew off the shelf, begging me to read it again.

Oops I left the houses mouth open and the wind is practicing its opera.
I sit on the lazy couch and I stop its silly daydreaming!

Thank you for reading we will post more soon!

Swimming Update

As the swimming lessons with Hilton Brown come to an end, I just wanted to say a well done to each and everyone of you. You have really done a great job at listening to the instructors and you are all now swimming with better speed and technique.

I am really looking forward to seeing you all take part in swimming sports in Week 5 and using the skills you have gained.

Well done Room 25 :)

Homework Week 3

                                                   Homework

Week 3 Week beginning 16th February

Maths : Complete the tasks that have been set for you. If you have highlighted times table that need to be learnt please look at practising those too.

Reading: Using one of the texts you have taken from the library please spend at least 15 minutes each day reading. If you were to compare and contrast yourself with one of the characters from the book, what would that look like? Use your own understanding of a compare and contrast to do this.

Writing: We have been looking at personification all week; see if you can have ago at choosing an object and writing a poem to make it come alive. Use some of the ideas from your class work if you want.

Spelling: Not all children will have spelling this week. If you do please think about the long oo sound that, you studied with Mr Ratcliff, what others words can you find that have that sound and complete the word search.

Extra: have another look on the blog, what have our bloggers put on about this week?

Blog Spot address   : http://room25mbs.blogspot.co.nz/

Please also remember that PAT testing starts next week, come ready and prepared. Do not allow yourself to get nervous, it is just another way of teachers being able to see what you know and what you still need to learn.

Have a fantastic weekend and if you come across any new connections, feel free to bring them in ready to share with the class J
