Homework Week 10

Week 10 Week beginning 22nd June

 

This week homework is having a facelift. We have discussed it as a class and have decided that we will co-construct homework each week . You need to choose one writing task,  and one maths task and ensure that you read for at least 15min a night.

Writing

1.      Weekly Design – Create an invention that can improve something.

Draw it/ make it ( use a ruler)

Write about it ( tell me what it is, what it does, how it works, and what it improves)

Can you an online programme but you must have evidence in your book/google drive.

2.      Project on a topic area

-          Matariki

-          Nutrition

-          Sea/ocean

-          Animal

Choose one of the areas above and create a report on that topic area. It must link in some way.

Maths

1.      Create a bedroom/room – you need to measure the area and the perimeter ensuring that you have the scale correct. Does the bed fit into the room?

2.      Temperature – find out the different temperatures in different place, which places are the hottest/ coldest and why? Make a poster that makes your findings in an interesting way . You may also like to include a map in your work to show where these places are.


Reading – please read for at least 15 min a day.

Passage to improve homework week 9


The sun was setting. I walked towards the hill. My feet were sore. My red scarf was wrapped around my neck. The wind was blowing. My scarf was moving. In the distance I saw a figure. It moved slowly. Its outline was blurred. I got closer and could see it was a man. The sky was getting darker. The shadow was getting larger. My footprints left shapes in the sand. I screwed up my eyes to make out the figure. It was …..

 

Makes changes to the start of this story, ensure you also let me know who the figure is. Think about what makes a Level 3 writer and what you’ll need to include.

Homework Week 9

Week 9 Week beginning 15th June

 

Maths: Complete the tasks that have been set for you on Mathletics. Please also complete the maths sheet you have been given by the teacher.  

Reading: Using one of the texts you have taken from the library please spend at least 15 minutes each day reading. Please see if you can identify how the author has used singular and plural nouns and if any sentences include the possessive apostrophe. Note down any sentences that you find.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 

Writing: We have been looking at what makes a good level three writer this week and have been looking at drafting and editing our stories In the Woods. Please use the passage below and improve it using the skills we have been learning.

Well done Guys!

Mandarin rolls off the tongues of pupils at Meadowbank School.
Principal Peter Ayson says almost 600 students at the school learn the Chinese language. A parent survey in 2011 highlighted the demand for it.
The school is now looking to officially open its Confucius classroom on June 16, he says.
"This year we had a speech contest for non-native speakers - it just shows how far we have come."
The focus is now on establishing and strengthening links between schools.
"It is about ensuring there is the opportunity for them to develop their language skills when they move from one school to the next."
Ayson says all of this work has been done out of the school's budget or with the help of the Confucius Institute, a Chinese Government funded language school.
"We don't get any funding from the government. We saw a need and made it happen," Ayson says.
Mandarin teacher Amy Ko was a classroom teacher before she moved to the school and started focusing on her mother tongue.
She says its vital children pick the language up in year 2.
                                          
"They aren't afraid of making mistakes," she says.
"I always say the most important thing in my classroom is that you give it a go, even if it is wrong as long as you are trying to use the language I am happy."
Those who have been under Ko's wing for four years are making gains.
"I want the students to use the language outside of the classroom," she says.
"We do very practical lessons so when the children go to a Chinese restaurant or supermarket they can use what they've learnt.
"It really broadens their horizons."

Week 8 Week beginning 8th June

 

Maths: Complete the tasks that have been set for you. Please also practice the times table that you have been working on this week with your group.

Reading: Using one of the texts you have taken from the library please spend at least 15 minutes each day reading. Please spend some time using the skill of visualising, can you visualise what the passage is telling you?

Writing: We retold a story this week. Using your own text of choice. Retell the story thinking about what a level 3 writer needs to include. Your task is to retell the story and elaborate as you go. You can retell it either in your homework book or using a desktop computer.

Subject Specific Vocabulary.
Simple and compound sentences that have different structures, beginning.
Complex sentences
Paragraphs with linking words.
Adjectives, adverbs, nouns, and verbs
Similes , metaphors, onomatopoeia
Capital letters and full stops
Speech marks ( new line, new speaker)
Commas to show lists and/or clauses.
Semi colon
Coherent ( reads grammatically correctly)

 

Spelling : The apostrophe for possession . Use the following words in their plural sense to write a sentence that requires you to use the possessive apostrophe.

Maths: Complete the tasks that have been set for you. Please also practice the times table that you have been working on this week with your group.

Reading: Using one of the texts you have taken from the library please spend at least 15 minutes each day reading. Please link your reading see if you can find any nouns, look for plural nouns and proper nouns, remember we looked at this week in class.

Writing: Please use the reading sheet that looks specifically at inference and ensure that your answers are written and you re-read to check for punctuation and grammar.

Spelling : Please note down five of the spellings that you have been corrected on and learn them, it may help to use them into a sentences, practice spelling it forwards and backwards.

Writing - What should it look like?


What should Year 6 writing look like?

To meet the National Standards for writing, we have to be writing solidly at Level 3L by the end of the year. To be above the national standards, we have to be starting to write at Level 4E of the curriculum.
 
 
What does this mean? Well use the following website to look at what you'd need to be able to do, make sure you share it with your parents.


Here is the level 3 success criteria. Do you do all of this independently and consistently? If not, what do you need to work on?

I independently apply a process and write texts choosing

language and overall text structures that suit my audience and

purpose (recounting, describing, narrating, reporting, arguing
